Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I see a Chiropractor?
Chiropractic care supports your health in many other ways besides relieving back pain, neck pain, or headaches. Just like seeing your dentist regularly helps to prevent any issues arising with the health of your teeth, chiropractic care has been known to help prevent degenerative health problems in the process.
Is chiropractic effective?
Chiropractic care helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time. It works by restoring your body’s own natural ability to heal. For your body to remain healthy, your nervous system must function properly. For your nervous system to function well it must be free of interference (no pinching of delicate nerves). When we restore spinal function with Chiropractic adjustments, nerve interference by misaligned vertebrae is removed, and this allows optimal nervous system function and improved overall health. So in short, it’s absolutely effective.
What is subluxation?
A subluxation is when vertebrae (spinal bones) become misaligned (moved out of its normal position). Subluxations can be caused by a wide range of issues ranging from a minor slip or bump to a car accident to any sudden trauma. When a vertebra is subluxated, it can put pressure on nerves, blood vessels, and everything around it. This pressure comes with a price: the subluxation interrupts the nerve signals sent from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain, ultimately causing dysfunction and a host of health issues.
How does chiropractic care work?
Chiropractic care is an overall way of looking at the human body. It's based on the idea that the body is self-sustaining and self-healing. The body is in essence controlled completely by the brain through its connection via the spinal cord and the vast networks of nerves that make up the body. When this system is not functioning, the overall performance of the human body is lacking.
While nutritional education and supplements may be recommended in addition to treatment, prescription drugs are not, as they are seen more like band-aids to treat symptoms rather than treating the source of the real problem.
Many people think chiropractic care is only for back and neck pain, however, it’s really a way to treat the entire mind and body holistically to create balance. Chiropractors not only treat soft and hard tissue problems such as sciatica and joint pain, they also are largely called on to deal with more significant issues like fibromyalgia, allergies, insomnia, headaches and more.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe?
A chiropractic adjustment involves minor movement or manipulation of vertebrae in the spine. The purpose is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of place for a number of reasons ranging from normal daily activity to trauma such as a car accident.
When these vertebrae are out of place, it has an overall systemic effect from muscular system to the central nervous system. Without proper alignment and flow of all nerves and systems in the body, we can't function at our peak.
An adjustment is often a pressure from the chiropractor utilizing the hands or an instrument to move a vertebra back into place. This happens with a quick movement and is often without discomfort. You may hear a noise that sounds like you're cracking your knuckles, that’s called joint cavitation. It is the release of gases such as oxygen and nitrogen from the joint.
These adjustments are safe and should not be painful. You can always talk about what kind of adjustments you are comfortable and ask questions with your chiropractor at each appointment.
What results can I expect?
Chiropractic care is based on the idea of removing structural and postural imbalances in the body in an effort to allow your body to better heal itself.
For this to happen, the network of nerves and nerve signals from your brain, down your spinal cord, to the network of nerves throughout your body must be allowed to flow freely without any interruption. Chiropractors have the ability and skill to remove these interruptions or misalignments and allow the body to perform as it was meant to.
If you've ever been in a car accident, played a sport, fell down or just bumped into something too hard, it's very possible that you are not functioning at your best due to a misalignment. Working with a chiropractor can help you get back on track so that your body can perform at its peak.
